The Art of Acceptance - Living in an Imperfect World

8/5/2012

Stephanie Dowrick interviewed on Life Matters

‘Only the best is enough’ is often out of reach, it is idealised.

The focus is often on the goal rather than being present to the process. When the focus is only on the goal then it becomes very narrow. When things change or don’t go the way we thought it can really challenge our sense of control. By obsessing over it we lose trust: trust in others, trust in ourselves. We lose living in the experience, discoveries and staying with the process.

A discussion on completing tasks follows:

Depression Website Addresses the Issues Positively

16/4/2012

The NZ Ministry of Health provide a very helpful and informative website addressing the issues of depression. A sub-tile for the website is, "understanding more about depression will help you find a way through."

Ex-All Black, John Kirwan features on the home page and his 'self test' is there for users.

Top level pages on the site are:
- is this depression?
- what can cause it?
- finding a way through
- stay well
- helping others

The home page is accessible here:
http://www.depression.org.nz/content/home

A depression helpline 0800 111 757 is available for users.

A particularly helpful part of the website is its comprehensive
Depression Resources offered in addition to the excellent website content itself. These consist of: fact sheets |  booklets | online resources.

I Work With Groups

I Enjoy Working with Groups
I am available to work with groups seeking assistance around a number of issues. These may include:
Chronic & serious illness in the workplace, organisation or community
Engaging with change
Loss & grief issues
Team building
The challenge of self-care for people helpers....

Team building and group dynamics are among issues I have addressed with groups. I currently co-facilitate the "Heartsong" Wellington Bereaved Parents support Group. A particular passion is helping groups appreciate how 'rituals' help people to make meaning out of their life experiences.

My group work fees are $120+ per hour for businesses; $100+ per hour for NGO and Community groups.

Contact me to discuss possibilities for your business or organisation.

BEYOND WORDS - Grieving when your child has died

28/3/2012

View the Promotional Brochure
by Andrew Thompson (Starship Hospital and Auckland University) and Tricia Irving Hendry (Skylight Trust).

This new NZ book that has been launched this week by the Skylight Trust.

"The death of a child is a heartfelt experience like no other.
It is a deep grief experience that goes beyond words."

The loss affects bereaved parents emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. It makes more demands on them than most others ever realise.

Many bereaved parents say that the only people who can ever genuinely begin to understand what it’s like for them are other bereaved parents. Hearing from others who have ‘been there’ can make all the difference. For this reason, Beyond Words is a handbook that features the honest words, perspectives and suggestions of many bereaved parents. It also offers useful information about managing grief, support options and ideas that may be helpful on the grief journey.

It is comforting, encouraging, informative and practical.

It will also provide understanding and insights to professionals and others seeking to effectively support bereaved parents.

You can buy a copy from Skylight Trust for NZ$26 plus p&p.

Because U Matter was launched as a website and blog today.

Naturally, this is a big move as I further develop my counselling services and resources. I'd love to know what you think. How can I improve my web presence? What other 'things' could helpfully be added?

Why not make a blog post here...?
